Review of show 'Diggin' in the Crates'

This is a weekly show by a DJ in Calgary, Alberta, Sideshow Sid. I've began listening to his former show, The Musiquarium, since about 2005 and when that show ended I feared for a bleak funkless future. However, Sid returned with this masterpiece show called Diggin' in the Crates. He plays pre-millenial (<2000 year) music only - mostly from vinyl, tapes, CDs, and even 8-tracks from his collection. Sideshow's deep dive into rare groove and funk leaves a wake of wavy events, thicc waves of funk washing through your quandrant of the universe, renewing your faith in the glory of music.

Drill For Absentee, Strand of a Lake, Vol. 1 Interview

My road trip driving playlists are always filled with music I haven’t listened to, which in this case had a lot of highlights and lot of lowlights. However, at this particular moment, driving on this windy, sketchy road in the middle of the night, a two-song, self-titled single by Drill For Absentee with an unassuming cardboard album cover came on. And it blew me away. The music had intricate performances, complex rhythms that stood out without sounding too janky, and feelings that were equal parts tense and intense. Right after that, their five-song EP Circle Music came on and I continued to be amazed for every one. It was, in that moment, exactly the music and energy I needed to dodge potholes that I could barely see.

Is This, Frog Rock?

During the first week of February, Fairbanks hosted a double feature weekend of music by Anchorage band, Medium Build. Hailing from Southcentral AK, Medium Build ventured up into the interior for a one-weekend, two-show stop. Their performances spanned across the Golden Heart City, starting out their sub-arctic tour with a classic UAF Pub Friday night, to a second appearance in the core of downtown at The Venue, on Saturday.

A playlist from DJ Release Stress - your KSUA Station Engineer

This playlist is about Afrobeat; music from West Africa combined with Western Jazz, American funk, soul influences and calypso. The beats along will shake from one side to another. Afrobeat was developed in Nigeria in the late 1960s by Fela Kuti. I listen to Afrobeat because it’s a global palatable sound and aesthetics which represents the spirit of modern Africa.

Album Review- Evening with Silk Sonic

Although Silk Sonic has only been making music as a group for a year, they have gotten a lot of notoriety, and their debut album was 2021’s album of the year. Much of their success can be attributed to Bruno Mars, who had a successful career before making the group with his friend Anderson Paak. The album “Evening with Silk Sonic” has a 70’s groovy vibe to it, and the way the songs are arranged tell an exciting story.

Sikumi (On The Ice)

“There are many reasons why I love this film, there is dog sledding, a sense of uneasiness at times, a murder, not knowing what is going to happen next, along with many more similar reasons. I personally love murder mystery movies and shows. Even though Sikumi (On The Ice) is not a mystery, it still give a sense of mysteriousness concerning Taqi’s actions and decisions.…”

Self-Love in Sampa the Great’s The Return

“My Zambian-ness, or my African-ness, meant nothing...because you wanted to claim this thing as [being] Australian….I started my professional career there. That is not a loss. This thing to claim a person, claim a being, is very racist.” -Sampa

Album Review: Bottom Down

And then for this one maybe say something like “Transcend to new planes of existence with me, reviewer DJ Jimmy, in the musical experience some would call ‘Buddhist Noise’ known as Bottom Down by Guilty C.” Also, I’ll plug my show, Brushing My Teeth To Merzbow, airing Tuesdays 8-10ish pm.
