Track Review: SLUGGER by Kevin Abstract

This track’s a relatively new release from an artist that I’ve recently been keeping more of an eye on -- Kevin Abstract. His vibes remind me of certain qualities/vibes that JPEGMAFIA (thinking All My Heroes Are Cornballs) and LAUNDRY DAY (thinking Light Up Shoes 2) have. I would say I’m not the biggest fan of Kevin Abstract’s solo work, specifically things I’ve listened to from American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story, but Kevin grabbed my attention on “SLUGGER ft. $not and slowthai”.

First thing’s first: this punchy, energetic beat. The image I get from it’s static vibe is just… jittery? Constantly in motion, constantly in some state of tension. The high notes and slight energy adds to the desire to be active, later tying in with the theme. It sounds like it’s key’s in minor, which helps to add some layer of realness. Sad, and guarded.

I be in my head, sometimes it's hard to talk
I be like my dog, 'cause sometimes it's hard to walk
Yeah, a nigga got these thoughts, but ain't never been soft
I been takin' niggas down since a nigga was small

This reads to me like someone who’s angry at themselves, angry for feeling weak or small, for needing assistance, and not being able to reach out for it, and reminding themselves that they’re tough.

I've been movin' heavy, try to givе my soul time
Life movin' fast, boy, you need to slow down
It's alright if you waste my timе
'Cause I fuck with you, nigga (I fuck with you)
I've been movin' heavy, try to give my soul time
Life movin' fast, boy, you need to slow down
It's alright if you waste my time
'Cause I fuck with you, nigga, I fuck with you

This chorus reads to me like the person from the first verse can recognize the reasons why they feel what they do, and forgiving themselves for whatever it is making them angry.

Speaking of the lyrics, themes I pick up on include sorrow, trust/loyalty, survival, pushing through the day-to-day, and through it all, just simple, clear explanation and expression. Stylish and steezy throughout.

I think the only real shortcoming off the track was slowthai’s verse. To me, it really doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the song. This might also be my bias against UK Rap/drill showing (and my ignorance in the genre itself, it may not even be drill). I’d say that the verse grew on me over time, but I still think it’s the track’s weakest link. The track is still highly replayable, but care not to overplay it, hahah. Overall, a very strong 7-8 out of 10. Maybe I’ll revisit this once it’s given time to age.

Until next time, thanks for reading, I hope you likey.
Don’t forget to tune into Untitled 01 from 9-10/10-11 on Monday nights!
Have a great week. :)
