A Look at the New Drill For Absentee Release

By Jimmy of Brushing My Teeth To Merzbow

Hello, Jimmy here. I’m excited to announce a new release from one of the hidden gems of the 90’s, Drill for Absentee. These guys started playing when the math rock and hardcore scenes were blooming across the US. In their early days they even played shows with Blonde Redhead, Faraquet, and American Football. Read more about it here. And catch my show, Tuesdays at 8 pm.

About two years ago, I discovered the band Drill For Absentee while driving through one of the more untouched areas of the Alaskan wilderness. Their music was very fitting for the dark and mangled road that I was driving on and I was blown away by their sound, although later I was surprised to learn that they were a very, very underground band. Coincidentally, at that time they had recently reunited and planned to release a new EP (out now), so Kyle (formerly of the show Punk Planet but now graduated) and I thought we would reach out for an interview. Michael Nace graciously responded and that interview can be found here.

Fast forward to now, and the music that blew me away two years ago is now getting a re-release. Their original 90’s work has been remastered and will be released on vinyl soon, along with some unreleased and new tracks. The very kind email from Michael with details about the new release is included below. But first, their Bandcamp is here, their Twitter (X) is here, and you can find them on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

Hey, guys! I hope you’re doing well.  I wanted to give you a heads up that DFA is releasing Circle Music + 4, a compilation that includes all of our released music in the 1990s, plus an unreleased track (“Drown In Words”) from the Infinity Sessions (the same session that produced the tracks for our 7”) and a new song, “The Sea Is Watching,” which is based on a bass line that Kevin recorded in the 90s and some ideas on guitar and voice that I had then, but completed with our new drummer, Ken Kuniyoshi. All of the tracks were mastered/remastered by Bob Weston.

The compilation will go live on streaming on July 1, and we are releasing a limited-edition, 180-gram vinyl 12” on September 1st. Only 200 copies will be pressed. Now through July 1, we are offering a pre-order for the vinyl on Bandcamp, which gives people the chance to get the LP for $20 instead of $25, plus early access to the uncompressed digital tracks. All the info is here.

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Michael

In the following weeks, you will be able to hear tracks from this new release on KSUA!
